After months of early morning training, 23 Year 7/8 students completed their Big Day Out β covering over 17km around Renwick and even pulling a fire truck down Havelock Street!
Friday 23 June marked a day that once felt a long way off β the day 23 Year 7/8 students completed their Big Day Out, the culmination of months of training held twice a week from 7:45am to 8:45am before school.
The day finally arrived, and what an incredible group of determined, focused, and supportive students they were. The team navigated their way around the Renwick community, covering just over 17km in total.
Throughout the day, students faced a range of challenges β carrying logs and stretchers, navigating their route, supporting one another to stay positive, and managing their food and water intake carefully to sustain their energy levels. One of the absolute highlights, for both the group and the watching school community, was seeing the students pull a fire truck along Havelock Street β an unforgettable moment!
The programme was created and planned by Pita MacDonald, who has been a phenomenal support to both students and staff throughout. We cannot thank Pita enough for the time, drive, and dedication put into this programme. The growth in these students has been remarkable, and it has been wonderful to see that growth carry through into their classroom learning.
A big thank you also to the Kaitiaki staff who supported the group throughout training and on the Big Day Out itself β this programme simply wouldn’t be possible without your support.
